What’s important?

I think its important to ascertain what is important to you and live by that standard. As I look out at the snow dumping down on the Pacific Northwest, I am extremely grateful that I can live a life that does not force me to leave my warm, dry home to drive to a job “out there”. Although, I have many appointments and responsibilities to attend to during the week, none of them are required when the roads are icy. I do not need to get my child to a public school at a particular time. This is important to me. Actually, the less I have to attend to others’ will, the happier I am. It removes a stress from my life and I am happier.

Your mileage, of course, may vary. For you it might be having the ability to buy as many books as you want or buy that next computer game or provide for your child in a particular way or have more free time. It really doesn’t matter. The important thing is to figure out what is truly important to you and I don’t mean: I must make over $100,000 a year. What I’m talking about are those amorphous things that make you happy. If books make you happy, then proudly declare that you the highest heights.  Knowing what’s important to you is the first step to happiness. It provides us with something to strive for and when we have something to strive for, we can begin to create a plan or path to living the life we want.

So I ask you, what’s important to you?
